Prometheus Hyperscale to power Wyoming data center with natural gas, will offset through carbon capture

Deal with PureWest will power 1.2GW hyperscale facility in Evanston, Wyoming.

US data center developer, Prometheus Hyperscale, has signed a partnership agreement to power its Wyoming data center with a natural gas power solution tied to carbon removal credits.

Prometheus inked the deal with PureWest Energy, an independent natural gas company based in Wyoming, and Frontier Carbon Solutions, a carbon capture and storage developer.

The agreement will see the deployment of a natural gas power solution at its 1.2GW hyperscale data center campus in Evanston, Wyoming. According to the company’s website, phase one of the data center is already underway, with facilities expected to come online by 2026. The initial capacity that will be brought online was not disclosed.

The companies claim that the power solution will deliver dispatchable, flexible generation with a zero-carbon footprint and end-to-end traceability. In order to classify the gas generation as ‘low carbon,’ Prometheus will purchase 500,000 tons per annum of carbon removals from Frontier.

The credits are expected to be generated through the capture of biogenic carbon dioxide from various facilities across the Rockies and transporting liquid CO2 to Frontier's carbon sequestration facility in Southwestern Wyoming. The date when Prometheus will begin purchasing the credits was not disclosed. DCD has reached out to the company for clarification.

"This partnership represents an unprecedented opportunity to bridge the gap to a net-zero future using local resources," said Trenton Thornock, Prometheus Hyperscale founder and CEO. "Wyoming wins together when we leverage our natural resources and innovative spirit. PureWest's verified low-carbon natural gas and Frontier's advanced carbon capture and storage solutions enable us to build sustainable, next-generation data centers for the age of AI."

Prometheus was launched last September. Formally known as Wyoming Hyperscale Whitebox, the Wyoming-based company initially planned to develop a 120MW campus back in 2020. However, at its relaunch last September, plans were revised to 1GW. Following this latest partnership, the campus now has a planned capacity of 1.2GW.

The company has previously claimed that most of the power for the campus will be supplied byfour local wind farms, with the remaining served by the grid. Thornock has said this will eventually be reduced to zero, having last year signed an agreement with small modular reactor developer Oklo for 100MW of power.

It was not disclosed how much gas-fired generation PureWest will provide to Prometheus, and what subsequent impact that will have upon the consumption profile of the data center.

PureWest is an independent gas producer in Wyoming. According to its website, it is the top natural gas producer in the state, with a gross operating production of 650 million cubic feet of natural gas equivalent per day as of May 1, 2023. Further information is not available on its current production levels.

Founded in 2021, Frontier is a Dallas-based carbon capture and storage firm. According to its website, it specializes in the development of carbon capture infrastructure and carbon marketing, with an initial focus on Wyoming. The company is owned by private equity firm Tailwater Capital.
