Meta Leases 168MW AI Data Center from Reliance in Gujarat, India
Meta has signed a deal to lease a 168MW data center facility from Reliance Industries in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, marking one of the largest single-tenant data center agreements in the country. The facility, built and owned by Reliance, is purpose-designed to support Meta’s artificial intelligence workloads and will run entirely on renewable energy, using desalinated seawater for cooling.
The partnership underscores the growing demand for AI-ready infrastructure in India, a market where global tech giants are rapidly expanding their physical footprint. Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the facility would help the company scale its AI infrastructure globally while deepening its long-term investment in India’s economy. He described the Jamnagar site as “world-class” and positioned the deal as a strategic move to support Meta’s expanding AI operations outside the United States.
Reliance first announced plans for a gigawatt-scale data center campus in Jamnagar in 2024. It remains unclear whether the 168MW allocation represents a portion of that planned capacity or an entirely new building. The companies said the facility could be scaled up in the future, though no opening date has been disclosed. Under the terms of the agreement, Meta will cover the cost of power and water required for the data center.
Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, called the partnership a “transformative moment” for India’s digital infrastructure. He said building India’s first built-to-suit AI data center for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. He added that Reliance is committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation not just for India, but for the world.
In a parallel announcement, Meta said it has purchased more than 900MW of clean energy in India. The company signed a deal with CleanMax for 837MW of new solar and wind projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka, and partnered with Fourth Partner Energy for 88MW of new solar and wind projects across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. It did not specify whether this energy would be directly used for the new Jamnagar data center.
The deal follows Meta’s $5.7 billion investment in Reliance’s Jio Platforms in 2020, which gave the company a stake of just under 10 percent. In April 2024, reports emerged that Meta was considering taking data center space at a Reliance facility in Chennai. The Jamnagar agreement represents the first publicly confirmed data center lease between the two companies, signaling a deepening of their strategic relationship in India’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
