Meta Invests $115 Million to Build Skilled Trade Workforce for AI Data Center Construction
Meta has committed $115 million to a workforce development initiative aimed at strengthening the pipeline of skilled trade workers needed to build its expanding network of AI-focused data centers. The investment, made in partnership with the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), targets four U.S. states where Meta is currently constructing or planning major AI data center campuses: Ohio, Illinois, Texas, and Virginia.
The initiative comes at a time when the construction industry is struggling to find enough qualified workers to meet surging demand from hyperscale data center projects. Meta’s investment is designed to fund training programs, apprenticeship pathways, and recruitment efforts that will prepare workers for careers in electrical, mechanical, and other specialized construction trades critical to data center development. The company expects that the program will help fill thousands of skilled labor positions over the next several years.
One of the flagship projects benefiting from this workforce pipeline is Meta’s Bowling Green Data Center in Middleton Township, Ohio. The more than $800 million AI-focused campus is currently under construction, and Meta says it will employ more than 1,000 skilled trades workers at peak construction. When the facility becomes operational in 2027, it is expected to support approximately 100 permanent jobs. The workforce initiative is seen as a strategic response to a broader industry challenge: as AI infrastructure spending accelerates, the competition for experienced construction labor has intensified across the United States.
Industry observers note that Meta’s move reflects a growing recognition among hyperscale operators that securing a reliable labor supply is as critical as securing land and power for data center projects. By investing directly in training and apprenticeship programs, Meta is not only addressing its own construction needs but also helping to build a more sustainable workforce ecosystem for the broader data center industry. The partnership with ABC, a national trade association representing the merit shop construction industry, provides a structured framework for scaling these efforts across multiple states and project sites.
