Microsoft Acquires 470 Acres in Western Finland for Potential Data Center Development

Microsoft has taken a significant step toward expanding its Nordic infrastructure footprint by acquiring approximately 190 hectares (469.5 acres) of land on Finland’s west coast, marking the company’s latest move to bolster cloud capacity in the region. The land, located along the border of Vaasa and Mustasaari municipalities, is part of the GigaVaasa industrial zone and was selected for its existing industrial infrastructure, which could accelerate development timelines for a potential data center project.

The cloud giant signed a preliminary agreement to purchase the property, with roughly two-thirds of the site falling within Vaasa and the remaining third in Mustasaari. The acquisition underscores Microsoft’s long-term commitment to Finland, a country it views as strategically important for its European cloud operations. “We are pleased to take this step forward together with Vaasa and Mustasaari. Finland is an important country for us, and we are committed to investing here for the long term,” said Teemu Vidgrén, general manager of Microsoft Finland. He added that the land purchase builds on years of collaboration with local municipalities and authorities, and that the company’s immediate focus is on working with partners to explore development possibilities on the site.

Local officials welcomed the move, highlighting its potential to strengthen the region’s position as a global hub for energy technology. “We are very pleased to welcome a trusted, international operator to the GigaVaasa area. If realized, the project will bring additional data and energy expertise, further strengthening our position as a global hub for energy technology,” said Tomas Häyry, Mayor of Vaasa. Vaasa, the regional capital of Ostrobothnia near the Gulf of Bothnia, sits approximately 420 kilometers (260 miles) from Helsinki, where the vast majority of Finland’s data centers are concentrated.

Microsoft is currently developing its first cloud region in Finland, a project announced in 2022. The company is collaborating with energy firm Fortum to supply waste heat from two data centers under development in Kolabacken, Kirkkonummi, and Hepokorpi, Espoo. Construction is also underway in Vihti. According to Microsoft’s project update pages, work on the Espoo site is progressing as planned, with the second building set to begin shortly. However, excavation is temporarily paused due to the bird-nesting season and is expected to resume after June 30. In Vihti, work continues, while earthworks at the Kirkkonummi site were completed in April 2026, with facade and interior construction of the first data center building now underway and foundation work for the second building progressing.

The acquisition in Vaasa signals Microsoft’s intent to diversify its data center locations beyond the Helsinki metropolitan area, tapping into the GigaVaasa zone’s industrial ecosystem and energy infrastructure. This move could catalyze further investment in Finland’s western region, potentially attracting additional data center operators and reinforcing the country’s role as a key European hub for digital infrastructure and sustainable energy integration.
