Construction Commences on Major $3 Billion Data Center in Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis

March 30, 2026

Hong Kong has taken a significant step in solidifying its position as a leading digital infrastructure hub in Asia with the groundbreaking of a major new data center facility. The project underscores the strategic push to develop the city's innovation capacity and integrate more closely with the technological ecosystem of mainland China.

A groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, March 28, 2026, marked the official start of construction, attended by Hong Kong’s Secretary for Innovation, Technology, and Industry, Sun Dong. The facility is being developed by mainland Chinese firm Range Intelligent Computing Technology, which secured the development rights earlier this month. The company won a tender for a 116,365-square-meter (1.3 million sq ft) land parcel within the Boundary Commerce and Industry Zone of the Northern Metropolis, a planned technology park in Sandy Ridge, northern Hong Kong, adjacent to Shenzhen.

Range Intelligent Computing Technology was granted the land for a 50-year term and is expected to invest HKD 23.8 billion (approximately US$3 billion) into the project. Upon completion, the data center is projected to offer a substantial 250,000 square meters (2.7 million sq ft) of gross floor area. It is estimated to deliver a formidable 180,000 PFLOPS of computing power by 2032, positioning it as a critical asset for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads in the region.

The project represents a major expansion for Range, which currently operates six data centers in northern China's Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The company has publicly stated ambitions to build a total of 22 facilities, indicating this Hong Kong venture is a cornerstone of its growth strategy. The development within the Northern Metropolis is strategically significant, aiming to leverage Hong Kong's international connectivity and legal framework while fostering synergies with the manufacturing and tech powerhouse of Shenzhen just across the border.
