Valorem Plans Integrated 60MW Data Center with Solar and Storage in Western Finland
March 30, 2026
Finland is rapidly emerging as a strategic hub for data center investment, driven by its cool climate, abundant land, and access to cost-effective renewable energy. This trend is drawing a diverse mix of international and domestic developers aiming to capitalize on the country's green energy profile to power the next generation of digital infrastructure.
French renewable energy firm Valorem is the latest to advance plans in the region, targeting the development of a co-located data center, solar farm, and battery storage system in Western Finland. According to local reports, the company is negotiating for approximately 55 hectares of land in the Kissankallio area of Eurajoki, within the Satakunta region. The proposed integrated facility would feature a 60-megawatt (MW) data center, an 80MW solar plant, and a 30MW battery energy storage system (BESS).
Valorem's country director for Finland, Minna Jukola, indicated the project's significant scale, noting, "The intention is that the center could be expanded to several hundred megawatts if necessary. In any case, it would be a significant investment even in the initial phase." Eurajoki Mayor Vesa Lakaniemi welcomed the proposal, stating, "The project is a significant opening for Eurajoki from the perspective of the municipality's economic development and energy-efficient investments." Valorem, which has over 8.5 gigawatts of projects under development or operation across Europe, has a substantial portfolio in Finland, including the recently sold 313MW Viiatti wind farm.
This development is part of a broader wave of data center activity spreading beyond Helsinki. The Finnish Data Center Association estimates the country's live data center capacity will surge from 285MW in 2025 to 1.5GW by 2030. In the same Satakunta region, Finnish firm Greensky Energy is planning a 250MW campus in Huittinen, with a first phase of 100MW. Riikka Peippo, Huittinen's director of vitality, said the project would "strengthen the vitality of Huittinen by bringing significant investments, new jobs, and tax revenue."
Meanwhile, Finnish energy giant Fortum is developing a 150-hectare site in Pennala, Orimattila, for potential data center operators, with plans suggesting space for up to nine buildings. In Vaasa, construction has begun on FCDC's 66,000 square meter (710,418 sq ft) data center in the Lajametsä industrial area, with a potential launch in 2028.
The convergence of data center development with on-site renewable generation and storage highlights a key industry shift towards greater energy independence and sustainability, positioning Finland as a competitive location for operators seeking to reduce carbon footprint and manage power costs.
