Virtus Breaks Ground on €3 Billion, 204MW Data Center Campus Near Berlin
April 16, 2026
Virtus Data Centres has commenced construction on a major new data center campus in Wustermark, Germany, signaling a significant expansion of digital infrastructure in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. The move underscores the escalating demand for high-capacity computing, particularly to support artificial intelligence and cloud services across Europe.
The European operator has initiated work on the €3 billion ($3.5 billion) project, located approximately 12 kilometers west of Berlin. The sprawling campus will eventually span 3.7 million square feet (350,000 square meters) and is designed to deliver a total IT capacity of 204 megawatts. Construction is beginning with the site's dedicated substation, which is slated for completion by 2027.
Christina Mertens, Virtus' Vice President of Business Development for EMEA, highlighted the strategic importance of the development. "This ambitious undertaking is Virtus' second site in the Berlin Brandenburg region and follows hot on the heels of the announcement of our Berlin Marienpark Campus in May 2023," Mertens stated. "As we take this step, we are proud to contribute to the vibrant data center landscape of Berlin Brandenburg."
The campus is planned to comprise nine separate data center buildings, constructed in phases to meet Tier III+ availability standards. The first unit is scheduled to be operational in early 2028. A key sustainability feature involves channeling waste heat from the server halls to a district heating network serving the nearby Havelland and Potsdam areas. The facilities will be equipped with high-density rack support and advanced closed-loop chilled water cooling systems, targeting clients with high-performance computing and AI workloads. A substantial portion of the campus's power will be sourced from several proximate onshore wind farms.
This development marks a major step in Virtus's European growth strategy. The UK-headquartered company, founded in 2008, currently operates four campuses around London and has other projects planned in Buckinghamshire, England, and Milan, Italy. Its parallel project in Berlin's Marienpark, a 57.6MW campus set to open in 2027, further solidifies the operator's commitment to the German capital as a critical digital hub.
