Amazon Inks Nine PPAs in Australia for 430MW of Power
April 16, 2026
Amazon has significantly expanded its renewable energy portfolio in Australia, signing nine Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for approximately 430 megawatts of capacity. This move underscores the hyperscale cloud provider's strategy to power its rapidly expanding data center infrastructure in the region with clean energy and marks a strategic pivot by incorporating battery energy storage systems (BESS) into its global procurement for the first time outside the United States.
The newly contracted portfolio is a diverse mix of generation and storage technologies. It includes the 201.8MW Golden Plains 2 onshore wind farm in Victoria, developed by TagEnergy. The solar and battery hybrid projects encompass OX2’s 94.5MW/70MW Muswellbrook project in New South Wales, X-Elio’s 72MW/72MW project also in NSW, and Anza’s 48MW/48MW solar and storage project in Laceby, Victoria. Furthermore, Amazon has secured four smaller-scale distributed solar-battery projects and a PPA tied to the existing 56MW Mokoan Solar Farm in Hume, Victoria, which will now incorporate a 32MW BESS. Notably, eight of the nine PPAs involve battery storage components.
This latest procurement brings Amazon's total contracted capacity in Australia to roughly 990MW. The company stated these agreements will support its previously announced plan to invest AU$20 billion (US$13 billion) by 2029 to expand its Australian data center footprint. This investment, revealed in June last year, is aimed at developing new facilities and enlarging existing ones in key markets like Sydney and Melbourne.
The inclusion of battery storage in these deals is a critical development for the industry. It signals that major energy buyers like Amazon are actively seeking solutions to manage the intermittent nature of renewable sources like wind and solar, aiming to ensure a more reliable and stable power supply for their energy-intensive operations. This approach could set a precedent for other hyperscalers and large corporations globally, accelerating the integration of storage into corporate renewable energy strategies.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) established its initial cloud region in Sydney in 2012, added a Melbourne region in 2023, and has been steadily growing its infrastructure and government business in the country. In July 2024, AWS announced a partnership with the Australian government to build a top-secret data center, with the government committing AU$2 billion over a decade. The new renewable PPAs provide a foundational element for powering this ongoing expansion sustainably.
