AWS Announces Major $430 Million Data Center Investment in Navi Mumbai, India

April 14, 2026

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is advancing its significant infrastructure push in India with plans for a new $429.8 million data center campus in Navi Mumbai. This move underscores the intensifying competition in one of the world's fastest-growing cloud markets, where demand for digital services, artificial intelligence, and data localization is driving massive capital expenditure from global hyperscalers.

The cloud giant has applied for environmental clearance from the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority for a project on a 49-acre plot near Taloja. According to plans, the campus will feature six buildings, with four seven-story structures housing the data halls and two two-story buildings dedicated to critical electrical and water support systems. The facility is designed for a substantial total capacity of 473 megawatts (MW).

The land, situated within the boundaries of Asode and Burdul villages, was acquired by AWS in late 2024 from Macrotech Developers for Rs 450 crore (approximately $48.35 million). This acquisition is part of a broader land-banking strategy by AWS in the Mumbai metropolitan area, which included the purchase of an additional 38.18 acres from Lodha in Palava in December 2024.

This new investment aligns with Amazon's broader commitment, announced in December 2025, to invest $35 billion in India across its businesses, encompassing data centers and AI infrastructure. AWS has been steadily building out its footprint in the country, having launched its Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in 2016 with an investment of $3.7 billion by 2022. Following the launch of a cloud region in Hyderabad in 2022, the company pledged a further $7 billion for expansion there. The planned Navi Mumbai campus represents a strategic deepening of its presence in India's financial and commercial capital region.

The development will further cement Navi Mumbai's status as a prime data center hub, joining existing facilities operated by STT GDC, L&T, Sify, Colt, Equinix, and Bridge Data Centres. Notably, STT GDC is also developing a site near the AWS plot, with a groundbreaking ceremony held in March 2026, indicating concentrated growth in the Taloja corridor.
