Equinix Expands Mumbai Footprint with New AI-Ready Data Center

Equinix Launches Fourth Mumbai Data Center to Meet Surging AI and Digital Demand

April 8, 2026

Global digital infrastructure leader Equinix has inaugurated its fourth International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Mumbai, marking a significant expansion of its interconnected campus in India's financial capital. The launch underscores the intensifying demand for secure, high-density, and globally interconnected infrastructure, driven by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, cloud migration, and stringent data localization regulations in one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies.

The new facility, named MB3, is strategically located in Chandivali, Powai, adjacent to the existing MB2 site and just 1.5 kilometers from MB1. This proximity creates a robust, interconnected campus environment linked by physically diverse dark fiber networks. The five-story building, spread across nearly four acres, represents an initial investment of over $95 million. It offers an initial capacity of more than 1,370 cabinets, with a design that allows for future scaling to over 5,475 cabinets upon full build-out.

Equinix developed MB3 specifically to support high-performance workloads and hybrid multicloud deployments, featuring liquid cooling capabilities essential for power-dense AI inferencing. “As AI shifts from pilots to real-world inferencing at scale, enterprises face intensifying challenges around data gravity, latency, power density, and the imperative to keep sensitive data within secure, compliant local environments,” the company stated, highlighting the facility's role in enabling businesses to deploy AI closer to data sources and users while maintaining performance and compliance.

The opening was welcomed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who noted, “With Maharashtra hosting nearly 60 percent of India’s data center capacity, the addition of the AI-ready MB3 data center… further strengthens Mumbai’s position as the country’s premier digital hub.” He attributed such investments to the state's pro-business policies and focus on sustainable infrastructure.

With this launch, Equinix's cumulative investment in India exceeds $365 million, one of its largest sustained commitments in the region. Its combined campuses in Mumbai and Chennai, connected via dedicated dark fiber, now provide over 4,725 cabinets of capacity, enabling national redundancy and traffic optimization. Manoj Paul, Managing Director for Equinix India, pointed to strong policy enablers, including proposed tax holidays for cloud providers, as factors reinforcing India's position as a "trusted global digital hub." He emphasized that MB3 provides the essential "ecosystems, interconnection density and scalable capacity needed to power India’s next wave of digital expansion."

Aligning with its global sustainability goals, Equinix confirmed that MB3 is powered by 100 percent renewable energy. This is supported in part by a recently commissioned 26.4 MWp group captive solar project in India, expected to generate approximately 41.4 million kWh of clean energy annually and reduce carbon emissions by over 30,000 tonnes each year.

Globally, Equinix operates 280 data centers across 77 markets, serving more than 10,500 businesses. In the Asia-Pacific region, its portfolio includes 64 data centers spanning key economic hubs, with India playing a increasingly pivotal role in the region's digital architecture.
