European Digital Infrastructure Firm nLighten Commits £10 Million to Swindon Data Centre Upgrade
February 5, 2026
In a significant boost to the UK's regional digital economy, European digital infrastructure provider nLighten has announced a £10 million investment to modernize and expand its data centre facility in Swindon. The move underscores the growing strategic importance of edge computing infrastructure, which brings critical data processing and storage capabilities closer to end-users, reducing latency and improving reliability for local businesses and public services.
The investment will be directed towards nLighten's facility located on the South Marston Industrial Estate. The planned upgrades encompass significant enhancements to the site's physical infrastructure, security systems, and core technology. The modernization effort is also designed to facilitate future expansion, providing greater connectivity options to meet rising demand. The announcement follows a recent visit to the site by Swindon Borough Council leader Jim Robbins, who welcomed the capital injection. “It’s encouraging to see companies like nLighten investing in Swindon. This kind of infrastructure underpins everything from local businesses and jobs to public services and economic growth,” said Cllr Robbins. He added that the development strengthens Swindon's position as a destination for business growth and innovation, aiding efforts to attract new companies to the area. Justin Nesbitt, managing director of nLighten UK, emphasized the long-term strategic value of the Swindon location. “Swindon is a strategically important location for nLighten, and this planned investment reflects our long-term commitment to the town and wider region,”
Nesbitt stated. “We’re proud to be working closely with Swindon Borough Council to support local businesses, public services and future inward investment by providing secure, resilient digital infrastructure close to where it’s needed.” For the digital infrastructure sector, investments of this scale in regional edge data centres signal a continued shift away from over-reliance on major metropolitan hubs. By deploying capital to upgrade facilities in key towns like Swindon, providers like nLighten are positioning themselves to capture demand from enterprises and public sector organizations seeking robust, local IT infrastructure to support digital transformation and cloud adoption initiatives.
