Subgen AI Partners with Alibaba Cloud Netherlands to Expand AI Platform Access
February 5, 2026
In a strategic move to bolster its European AI infrastructure capabilities, Swedish AI compute and software provider Subgen AI has entered a cloud services agreement with Alibaba Cloud Netherlands. The partnership underscores the intensifying competition in the global AI-as-a-service market, where access to scalable, high-performance cloud infrastructure is a critical differentiator for AI platform providers. Under the terms of the agreement, finalized this week, Subgen AI and its client and partner network will gain integrated access to Alibaba Cloud's advanced data center infrastructure, AI development toolkits, and multilingual technologies.
Crucially, the arrangement is designed to ensure operations remain compliant with European data governance regulations. The deal will facilitate the geographic expansion of Subgen AI's flagship "Serenity Star AI" platform into new markets and customer segments without the need for heavy upfront capital investment in physical infrastructure. “This agreement with Alibaba Cloud Netherlands is an important milestone in Subgen AI’s long-term strategy to give Serenity Star customers better opportunities to scale AI,” said Lorenzo Sarratosa, Subgen AI’s CEO. He emphasized that partnering with a leading global cloud provider strengthens the company's ability to deliver secure, high-performance AI solutions worldwide while building a more efficient foundation for growth. The partnership arrives at a pivotal time for both companies. Subgen AI, which went public on the Nasdaq First North Stockholm exchange in November 2025, recently partnered with Microsoft in December to integrate its capabilities into the Serenity Star platform.
For Alibaba Cloud, the deal represents a continued push into the European market. The Chinese cloud giant announced in September 2025 plans to launch eight new international data center locations within a year, including its first facilities in Brazil, France, and the Netherlands. Earlier this week, reports indicated Alibaba is considering a significant increase in its AI and cloud capital expenditure, potentially reaching $69 billion by February 2028. For the broader industry, this alliance highlights the trend of AI software firms leveraging hyperscale cloud footprints to rapidly scale their offerings. It also signals Alibaba Cloud's aggressive strategy to capture market share in Europe by partnering with regional AI innovators, offering them an alternative to U.S.-dominated cloud providers.
