US Firm Cybastion to Build 20MW Data Center in Gabon, Boosting Digital Sovereignty
February 5, 2026
In a significant move to bolster digital infrastructure in Central Africa, US-based technology firm Cybastion has announced plans to construct a 20-megawatt (MW) data center in Gabon. The project underscores a growing trend across the continent to develop local data hosting capabilities, reduce reliance on foreign infrastructure, and retain data sovereignty within national borders.
The strategic agreement was formalized on January 28, 2026, between Cybastion's CEO Thierry Wandji and the Gabonese government, represented by the Minister of the Digital Economy and New Technologies.
The facility will be built in the capital city, Libreville, with construction managed by Porteo SA. A symbolic foundation stone has already been laid at the site. To ensure a dedicated power supply, the Gabonese government will concurrently establish a 20MW gas-fired power plant.
Cybastion will collaborate with digital communications leader Cisco on the project. The initiative also includes the launch of "Africa DigiEmpower," a program aimed at training local talent through the Cisco Networking Academy. The company states its broader mission is to "empower Africa's digital future by creating secure, resilient, and reliable digital ecosystems."
This project follows Cybastion's previous digital infrastructure ventures in Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire.
The new data center is poised to enhance Gabon's digital resilience by providing a secure, local hub for national data, potentially improving latency for domestic services and supporting the country's broader economic digitalization goals. It enters a market where a few facilities already operate, including another project under development in Libreville's Nkok Special Economic Zone by pan-African provider ST Digital.
