AWS Inks 110MW Offshore Wind PPA with RWE to Power German Operations
February 4, 2026
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has taken a significant step in its European decarbonization strategy by signing a major 110-megawatt (MW) Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with German energy giant RWE. The deal underscores the intensifying pressure on hyperscale cloud providers to secure large-scale, reliable renewable energy to power their rapidly expanding data center infrastructure and meet ambitious climate goals. The agreement is tied to the Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm, a 900MW project currently under development in the eastern German North Sea. This wind farm is part of a larger cluster being developed through a joint venture between RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management. Its sister project, the 600MW Nordseecluster A, is scheduled for commissioning in 2027, with Nordseecluster B expected to come online in 2029. The 110MW of capacity secured by AWS represents a substantial portion of the future project's output. In a statement, Rocco Bräuniger, country manager of Amazon in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, linked the agreement to broader national and corporate objectives: “Germany is transitioning to an energy future that is modern and carbon-free, and this agreement with RWE helps advance that vision. As Amazon works toward net-zero carbon by 2040, we continue enabling projects that strengthen Germany's renewable energy capacity for generations to come.” The PPA builds upon a Strategic Framework Agreement the two companies signed in June 2025, which also involved AWS providing cloud and AI services to support RWE’s digital transformation. For RWE, such long-term contracts are crucial for financing new renewable projects. Ulf Kerstin, chief commercial officer at RWE Supply & Trading, noted, “Power Purchase Agreements like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long‑term security of supply. By enabling large‑scale offshore projects such as the Nordseecluster, we can bring more reliable, carbon‑free electricity onto the grid and support a resilient energy system.” This marks AWS's fourth major offshore wind PPA in Germany, following previous deals including a 100MW agreement with Ørsted for power from the Borkum Riffgrund 3 wind farm in 2021. The move signals a continued trend of hyperscalers directly investing in and contracting for renewable energy generation at a utility scale, a critical mechanism for greening the power-intensive data center industry and achieving corporate sustainability targets.
