Netcloud Secures $1.6 Million Contract to Operate Swiss Municipal Data Center

February 3, 2026

In a move highlighting the growing trend of public sector digitalization and outsourcing, Swiss managed services provider Netcloud has been awarded a significant contract to operate the core IT infrastructure for a local municipality. The deal underscores the critical role specialized third-party operators play in supporting government IT modernization, particularly for smaller authorities seeking enterprise-grade reliability and expertise.

The company has secured a contract valued at 1.4 million Swiss francs (approximately $1.6 million) to manage a new, geo-redundant data center for the municipality of Steffisburg, located near Zurich. According to the tender published last year, Netcloud will be responsible for running the lower levels of the municipal IT stack, up to and including the virtualization layer, for a period of just under five years. The infrastructure will support IT services for approximately 1,900 users across 24 locations, including local administration offices and area schools.

While Netcloud assumes operational control of the foundational infrastructure, the Steffisburg authority will retain oversight of key elements such as virtual machines, virtual hardware, and DMZ access rules within the outsourced environment. Netcloud, a Winterthur-based firm founded in 1998 with over 300 employees and partnerships with major technology companies like Nvidia and Microsoft, was selected from a field of three bidders for the contract.

This contract represents a strategic win for Netcloud in the competitive Swiss managed services and public sector market. For municipalities like Steffisburg, which hosts only one other known data center facility, partnering with an established operator provides access to specialized skills and robust, geographically redundant infrastructure without the capital expenditure and operational burden of building and maintaining it in-house. The award is now subject to a standard 20-day appeal period, as stipulated in the official contract notice.
