Orange launches data center outside Sousse, Tunisia

Telco opens 1,000 sqm facility.

Telecoms firm Orange has launched a new data center in Tunisia.Orange Tunisie this week announced it had inaugurated a facility in Kalaa Kebira, Sousse.

The Tier III-quality facility spans 1,000 sqm (10,765 sq ft) and will support Orange’s own needs as well as customers. It will offer high-quality hosting solutions, covering services such as cloud computing, backup, and business continuity, in a locally managed environment.

"We are proud to have built this beautiful Tier III data center with 100 percent Tunisian expertise, using Tunisian companies for the design offices, inspection, and implementation," said Adel Akrout, network and services director at Orange Tunisia, as reported by IlBoursa.

The opening ceremony was attended by Sofiene Hemissi, Minister of Communication Technologies; Brelotte Ba, deputy general manager, Orange Middle East and Africa; and Thierry Millet, general manager of Orange Tunisia.

Hemissi said: “This is nothing new for Orange. The operator consistently pursues its commitment to the development of technological projects. Today, Orange Tunisia is an important foundation in our telecommunications ecosystem."

She added: "We are very proud that Tunisia is among the first countries in Africa and the first in North Africa to have launched 5G. This is the result of collective work, with committed operators determined to succeed."

Kalâa Kebira is located outside Sousse, some 130km (80.7 miles) south of the capital city, Tunis. Local operator EO Data Center is also present in Sousse, but most of the country’s facilities are located in and around Tunis.

Orange Tunisia, Ooredoo Tunisia, and Tunisie Telecom all launched their respective 5G networks in Tunisia earlier this year, just months after gaining their 5G licenses.

Orange is part of the Medusa subsea cable linking France to Tunisia; the company is developing a cable landing station in Bizerte.
