Evolution DC partners with Thai property developer Central Pattana for Bangkok data center

June 13, 2023 - Singaporean firm Evolution Data Centres has partnered with Thai property developer Central Pattana PCL to build a new data center in Bangkok.

The joint venture deal will see the two companies develop a 34MW carrier-neutral data center in Thailand in central Bangkok. Phase 1 of the facility is expected to be operational in H2 2024.

"We are excited to be partnering with Central Pattana PCL to bring our expertise to Thailand,” said Darren Webb, CEO of Evolution Data Centres. “Thailand is an important, high-growth market, for us, and we are committed to delivering world-class infrastructure to support the country’s digital transformation. We have seen some of the major Cloud providers recently move into the country, we look forward to combining the strengths of EDC and Central Pattana PCL to build and operate a hyperscale, greener data center, to underpin future growth.”

Founded in 1980, Central Pattana is a major developer in Thailand largely focused on retail properties but also develops office, hotel, and residential properties. It is part of the local Central Group conglomerate.

“Central Pattana is proud to partner with Evolution Data Centres to bring cutting-edge technology to Thailand,” said Phoom Chirathivat, head of hotel and alternative investments at Central Pattana. “This joint venture marks a significant milestone for our company and is in line with our vision to become a leading mixed-use property developer regionally which includes digital infrastructure in Thailand. With EDC’s expertise in data center solutions, we are confident that our partnership will contribute to the growth of Thailand’s digital economy.”

Founded in 2021 and headquartered in Singapore, Evolution last year received backing from Warburg Pincus. Evolution CEO Webb was previously the MD for Asia for IO Data Centres. Co-founder Ed Martin-Sperry was previously head of Asian TMT investment banking at ING.

Earlier this year it partnered with Philippine construction company Megawide Construction Corp. to develop a 69MW colocation data center in Cavite. This marked the company’s first data center announcement, though it has been quoted in the Straits Times discussing Batam’s suitability for data centers.

The likes of Telehouse, Eix Everywhere, Bridge DC, Supernap, NTT, STT GDC, and Singtel all have or are developing a presence in Bangkok. Cloud providers including AWS, Alibaba, and Tencent are present in the country.
