June 2, 2023 - According to South Korean media Businesskorea, Intel is planning to establish a lab dedicated to data center development in Seoul, South Korea. The company will collaborate with South Korean memory manufacturers Samsung and SK Hynix to research server memory technologies. Industry insiders revealed that Intel announced this plan during the Intel Vision 2023 event held in January. The exact size of the new laboratory in Seoul is unknown, but it is expected to be operational within the year 2023.
Previously, it was reported that Intel intends to establish new laboratories in five countries, including South Korea, the United States, China, Mexico, and India. The data center development laboratory in Seoul will focus on researching trending memory technologies such as CXL DRAM and DDR4 memory. The laboratories in other countries will also conduct research and certification related to the semiconductors for servers.
Insiders stated that Intel's laboratory in Seoul will play a crucial role in memory compatibility validation for Intel CPUs. The company aims to strengthen its relationship with DRAM memory manufacturers Samsung and SK Hynix. In recent years, the artificial intelligence and cloud computing markets have been experiencing rapid growth, leading to a significant increase in the number of large-scale data centers worldwide. With the upgrading of old data centers and the construction of new facilities, it is expected that the sales of DDR5 memory will noticeably increase in 2023.
