Shenzhen Promotes 5G Base Station Energy Storage System Access to Virtual Power Plant Management Center

Recently, at the 2022 Carbon Dafeng Carbon Neutral Forum and Shenzhen International Low Carbon City Forum held in Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Virtual Power Plant Management Center signed virtual power plant construction agreements with China Tower, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Huawei Digital Energy and other units The cooperation agreement will jointly promote the city's 5G base station energy storage system to be connected to the center by 2023, providing fast and flexible adjustment capabilities to ensure the safety of the energy and power system.

The virtual power plant is not a real power plant, but a set of energy management system, through the energy Internet technology, the aggregated management and optimal control of power load resources such as charging, air conditioning, lighting, and energy storage scattered among end users. The energy storage system is the core system to ensure the continuous power supply of 5G base stations. When the urban grid supplies power normally, the system can assist in smoothing and filtering to improve the quality of power supply. When the power supply is abnormal or fails, it can be used as a backup power supply. The backup energy storage of 5G base stations is usually idle, and it can be aggregated to participate in power grid dispatching by connecting to the virtual power plant management center.

According to the agreement, the signing parties will also explore business models and industrial application models for 5G base stations and other load resources to participate in demand-side response, spot market, and ancillary service markets, and provide replicable and scalable solutions for the reuse of "sleeping" resources in 5G base stations across the country.

The Shenzhen Virtual Power Plant Management Center has also signed contracts with 36 virtual power plant aggregators, involving power consumers, power generators, energy storage, and many upstream and downstream enterprises in the industrial chain such as R&D and design of virtual power plants, equipment manufacturing, etc. They will work together to drive virtual power plants related technological innovation and industrial development, and will further expand the participation of Shenzhen virtual power plants and promote the development of virtual power plant comprehensive demonstration projects.

On August 26, 2022, the Shenzhen Virtual Power Plant Management Center was officially unveiled. It is located in Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau of China Southern Power Grid. It is mainly responsible for the construction, management and daily operation and maintenance of Shenzhen Virtual Power Plant. The virtual power plant with adjustable capacity gradually forms a stable adjustment capacity of about 5% of the annual maximum load.
