First of all, what is a “Digital Twin” ? To sum up briefly, digital twin mainly replicates all the facilities of the data center in the computer through 3D technology, and establishes digital data model for elements such as wind, fire, water, electricity, IT equipment, park environment, monitoring system, access control, fire protection, and personnel movement. And then combined with mapping techniques, allow virtual and reality to interact with each other.

 

What is the role of the digital twin? Why do digital twin open a new era of data center asset management?

 

The digital twin has two main functions: the first intuitive experience and intuitive display.

 

For example, suppose that the pandemic is serious in Shanghai, where the computer room is located, and customers in Beijing want to check the situation of the computer room on the spot. Because of the COVID situation, they cannot go there, and they are not at ease just listening to the introduction of the sales staff. This 3D technology is used to establish a 1:1 ratio. A replica of the data center, you can see the whole picture of the park and all the equipment and facilities remotely.

 

With the audio guide, you can quickly scan the overall floor distribution in the computer room building, including the equipment, the bandwidth of the power network, the backup power of the equipment, the location of the target computer room, the campus environment, and the spare cabinets in the equipment room.


With monitoring system, you can see the real scene in the computer room, realize end-to-end visualization, and participate in the data center immersively, so that the cabinet information and the location information of the computer room can be fully controlled. This is the first important function.

 

The second largest role is virtual simulation, which is also the most practical role of digital twin in my opinion.

 

By accessing various data, such as dynamic environment, monitoring, fire protection, environment, IT equipment, personnel movement, CMDB, and factory parameters of various equipment, real-time perception, diagnosis and prediction of the current operating status of the data center are performed. The model conducts parameter control experiments, and uses scientific verification results to feed back to the entity, so as to effectively control the PUE, save water and electricity, and reduce losses.

 

For another example, let us take the energy saving of HVAC equipment as an example. We can scientifically calculate the optimal combination of energy saving in theory through various parameters of the equipment from the factory. However,  when you get the physical level of practice, the theory and reality may have a big discrepancy. We can use virtual simulation technology to intelligently analyze the environmental operating parameters in the twin body, and train the energy-saving model by regulating key points such as soft start, soft stop, load distribution, and oil return control of the equipment, so as to achieve real adaptive control and guide energy saving at the real level. regulation.

 

This is why digital twin can open up a new era. What are the application scenarios of data center asset management under digital twin?

 

Application Scenario 1: RFID-U-level asset management, we know that the asset equipment in the data center is very large and there are many types. Digital twin can make the asset and configuration management of the data center more intuitive. Through RFID technology, you can not only know where the assets and equipment are located, but also quickly locate the target equipment, view equipment information and operating status, and even understand the relationship between equipment through the topology map, from equipment procurement, registration, storage and etc, to manage the whole life of the assets.

 

Application Scenario 2: Asset ledger to control the asset life cycle. The asset ledger is an important part of asset management. The system integrates, organizes and categorizes various types of assets and equipment into data, standardization, standardization and systemization, so that operators can check and count the equipment assets. Through automated inventory, an asset ledger is formed for managers to refer to, and plans are made for the next equipment management tasks.

 


Application Scenario 3: Rent control management. The status of the data center will be directly related to the cash flow from the asset. On the operation side, according to the number of racks on the shelf and the terms of the electronic contract, the income plan, bills, and financial vouchers can be automatically generated, etc. It will create a closed-loop asset management process from contract signing to rack listing, rental collection, cost analysis, cash flow measurement, and IRR measurement. The costs include operating costs, operating costs, and labor costs.

 


Application Scenario 4: Online management of contract bills, direct electronic bills to customers. The contract management module helps operators formulate electronic contract templates, realize the electronicization of the whole process of new signing, change, lease renewal, lease cancellation, etc., safe storage, step by step traces, intelligently remind the contract expiration according to business needs, and take measures in advance.  Based on the contract, the receipt and payment plan, amortization, and financial vouchers are automatically generated, which eliminates a lot of manual accounting, and can realize the whole process of electronically signing, changing, renewing, and canceling the contract, and truly realize the full life cycle management of the contract. .

 

Application Scenario 5: Real-time statistics of operating benefits, adjustment of revenue growth strategies, data collection and analysis, model algorithm machine learning, etc., can be used to analyze the status of the data center. The deviation data is used to adjust the business strategy, and the operation status of assets can be remotely and accurately monitored in real time without going to the site, and the remote scenario-based intelligent management of data center resources, investment promotion, operation, finance and other dimensions can be realized.

 


At present, in the operation process of the data center, many data are mainly based on manual statistical operations, the information production efficiency is low, the transparency is limited, there is a large operational risk, the cost of asset information forgery is low, and the reliability of information transmission is low. This results in a delivery failure.
