Voltalia Secures 322MW Grid Capacity in Brazil to Power Data Center Expansion

French renewable energy company Voltalia has taken a significant step toward supporting Brazil’s growing data center industry by securing a 322MW transmission system use agreement with the country’s national grid operator, ONS. The capacity is allocated at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex in the northeastern state of Ceará, a region rapidly emerging as a digital infrastructure hub.

The agreement underscores the increasing convergence between renewable energy development and data center demand, particularly in markets where grid capacity and decarbonization goals are critical. Voltalia is currently in advanced discussions with several data center operators regarding the secured capacity, according to the company. It also plans to develop dedicated wind power projects at the Pecém site to supply decarbonized electricity to prospective customers, offering a direct pathway to sustainable operations for energy-intensive facilities.

Pecém, an industrial and port complex on Brazil’s northeast coast, provides available land, existing infrastructure, and direct grid access—key attributes for large-scale digital infrastructure projects. While no specific data center customers or project timelines were disclosed in the announcement, the company emphasized the strategic importance of the move. “This agreement marks an important step in Voltalia's strategy in Brazil, strengthening its ability to seize emerging opportunities linked to the rapid growth of the digital economy, particularly in the data center sector,” said chief executive Robert Klein.

Voltalia operates wind, solar, hydro, and biomass projects in more than 20 countries, with Brazil serving as one of its core markets. The company currently has an installed and under-construction capacity of 3.55GW, of which 2.9GW is operational. The new grid capacity at Pecém could further strengthen its position in the region while addressing the energy needs of a sector that is expanding rapidly across Latin America.

Ceará is fast becoming a data center hub in Brazil. The state currently hosts 26 operational data centers across 13 providers, with its capital, Fortaleza, housing 13 facilities. In October of last year, Tecto Data Centers launched its third facility in the city, a 20MW data center. The combination of available renewable energy, port access, and grid capacity positions Ceará as a strategic location for hyperscale and colocation projects looking to serve both domestic and international markets.
