Equinix Announces Fourth Malaysian Data Center with $190M Investment in Cyberjaya
Equinix, the global colocation giant, has announced plans to build its fourth data center in Malaysia, marking a continued expansion in the country’s rapidly growing digital infrastructure market. The new facility, named KL2, will be located in Cyberjaya, a planned tech hub south of Kuala Lumpur, and situated less than one kilometer from the company’s existing KL1 data center.
The $190 million project is expected to house more than 2,200 cabinets upon completion, though Equinix did not disclose specific details regarding the facility’s total size or IT capacity. The land for KL2 was acquired in July 2024, spanning 14,300 square meters (approximately 153,924 square feet), at a cost of around RM23 million ($5.8 million). The data center is designed to support artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads, and will incorporate liquid cooling technology to manage the heat density of advanced chips.
Equinix’s existing Malaysian portfolio includes three facilities: JH1 and JH2 in Johor, and KL1 in Cyberjaya. JH2, an expansion of JH1, topped out in 2025 and is set to deliver its first phase of 7 megawatts of IT capacity in the first quarter of 2027. Reports have indicated that Equinix is in discussions to acquire additional land in Johor to scale the campus to a total of 77 megawatts. JH1 was first announced in 2022 and launched in 2024.
The new KL2 facility underscores Equinix’s strategic focus on Southeast Asia, a region experiencing surging demand for data center capacity driven by cloud adoption and AI deployment. By situating KL2 close to its existing infrastructure in Cyberjaya, Equinix aims to offer low-latency connectivity and operational synergies for enterprises and hyperscalers seeking to expand in the Malaysian market.
