Datacom Expands New Zealand Footprint with Strategic Auckland Data Center Acquisition

Datacom Bolsters Sovereign Data Capability with Auckland Facility Purchase April 1, 2026 In a strategic move to strengthen its domestic infrastructure portfolio, New Zealand's veteran information and communications technology firm Datacom has acquired a significant data center in Auckland from T4 Group. The transaction underscores the growing emphasis on sovereign data control and reliable, locally governed digital infrastructure within the Asia-Pacific region. The acquisition, finalized this week, sees Datacom take ownership of the facility located at 42 Business Parade South in Auckland's Highbrook Business Park. Originally built around 2010 by IBM and later operated by Kyndryl, the 5,200-square-meter (56,000-square-foot) site offers 8MW of capacity and features 1,500 square meters (16,145 square feet) of raised floor space, hosting a range of public and private sector clients. Datacom completed the operational switchover and assumed all existing customer agreements as of March 31. This purchase marks Datacom's second data center site in Auckland and its fifth nationally, expanding a footprint that also includes facilities in Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch. The company's other Auckland site provides 10MW of capacity. Datacom CEO Greg Davidson highlighted the strategic rationale, stating, "Today, sovereign infrastructure is a critical priority for organizations that need certainty over where their data resides, how it is governed, and how reliably it can be accessed." He further revealed the scale of the company's commitment, noting, "With our four existing New Zealand data centers, this new acquisition and the planned investment in the site, Datacom has committed more than NZ$200 million (US$115.36 million) to building out our data center capability in New Zealand." For T4, the divestiture aligns with a refocused strategy. T4 Chief Executive Dean Addie explained the deal allows his company to concentrate investment on regional data center infrastructure across New Zealand. "This transition allows us to accelerate our regional expansion while ensuring customers in major centers continue to be supported by a trusted local New Zealand operator," Addie said. He framed the transaction as a positive development for the national ecosystem, adding, "With T4 concentrating on regional infrastructure and Datacom continuing to expand its Auckland footprint, we see this as a positive step in strengthening New Zealand’s sovereign data center capability." The deal reflects broader market dynamics where established operators are consolidating key urban assets while newer entrants pursue niche regional opportunities. Datacom, founded in 1965, offers a comprehensive suite of cloud, security, and managed services, and partners with AirTrunk for Australian capacity. T4, founded in 2021, retains a data center in Whangarei and has plans for another on the South Island. Source: datacenterdynamics
