Fertilizer Company Cultivates Unlikely Data Center Campus in Washington State

October 12.2025

A major six-building data center campus is being proposed for the Port of Kennewick in Washington state, an ambitious project brought forward by an unexpected developer—a local fertilizer company. CF Landholdings, a subsidiary of the fertilizer giant CF Industries, has submitted a development application to port officials for a sprawling 641,000 square foot facility on a 43-acre parcel of land. The proposed campus, which would be constructed in three distinct phases, represents a significant diversification for the agricultural business and a major infrastructure investment for the region.

The project's first phase would establish the campus's foundation with the construction of two data center buildings, totaling 241,000 square feet. Subsequent phases would see the addition of four more buildings to complete the complex. The land in question is situated within the Port of Kennewick's 300-acre "Horseshoe" development area, a strategic industrial zone located near the intersection of Interstate 82 and Highway 395. This location offers not only excellent transportation access but also proximity to critical power infrastructure.

The site is strategically positioned next to the Bonneville Power Administration's (BPA) Midway substation, a key factor for a power-intensive operation like a data center campus. While specific details on power capacity or potential tenants have not been disclosed in the application, the connection to the BPA grid is a significant advantage. The Port of Kennewick commissioners have acknowledged the proposal, with a discussion and potential vote on a land sale for the project anticipated for an upcoming meeting. If approved, this project would mark a substantial new chapter for both the port and CF Landholdings, transforming agricultural land into a hub for the digital economy.
