Will be used for the development of three data centers
A data center project in Poland is offering up to PLN 800 million ($220m) in funding.
As reported by CRN, the funding is for three state-owned data centers, with the Digital Poland Project Center calling for applications.
Dubbed the National Data Processing Center (KDCP) program, the project was announced in 2022. The data centers are each expected to span around 2,000 sqm (21,527 sq ft), and will "largely" be powered by renewable energy.
Where the data centers will be located has not been shared, but it will be on land owned by the state treasury.
Applicants have until November 28 to submit their proposals. According to the government website, the aim of the data centers is to provide "standardized data processing spaces within the infrastructure, which will enable the government to provide consistent services regardless of the size of the entity and its resources.
"It will also guarantee data security and sovereignty, eliminating dependence on commercial vendors."
The $220m in funding is being provided by the EU under the FERC program. In total, the data centers are expected to cost PLN 1 billion ($280m).
The grants are earmarked for construction and finishing works, the construction of the third data center, as well as testing of the three facilities.
The majority of Poland's data centers are located around the capital city of Warsaw. Operators include Atman, EdgeConneX, and Data4. Microsoft launched an Azure cloud region in Poland in 2023. Earlier this year, Microsoft committed to investing $704m in expanding its Polish data centers. European operator Switch is also looking to develop a data center in the country.
