Vantage Data Centers is mulling the purchase of Yondr’s data center campus in Johor for US$1.6 billion, according to Bloomberg last week, quoting people familiar with the matter. Both are backed by DigitalBridge Group Inc., a global alternative asset manager, which aims to streamline its portfolio to strengthen its footprint in Asia Pacific, the sources said. However, discussions are still ongoing and details might change, the people added.
Other investors such as sovereign wealth fund Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) would likely participate in the deal, the sources said.
Yondr Group is a leading global developer, owner and operator of hyperscale data centers and is run independently. In July, it was acquired by DigitalBridge Group Inc., and La Caisse (formerly CDPQ). The acquisition was part of DigitalBridge’s strategic investment aimed at accelerating global hyperscale data centre growth to meet the Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven surge in demand. Globally, Yondr has more than 420MW of capacity committed to hyperscalers and significant additional land to support a total potential capacity of over 1GW.
Its Johor campus, located in Sedenak Tech Park has a potential capacity of 300MW when fully completed.
Vantage Data Centers is a leading provider of data center solutions founded in 2010. In 2017, it was acquired by a consortium of companies including DigitalBridge Group. In Malaysia, it owns two data centers in Cyberjaya with total capacity of 467 MW.
DigitalBridge reportedly wanted to raise as much as US$1 billion through a stake sale in Vantage’s Asia-Pacific business. It is also considering offloading its assets in Hong Kong for as much as US$ 500 million, reported Bloomberg News quoting people familiar with the matter last year.
