Stonepeak-backed firm partners with local utility B.Grimm
APAC operator Digital Edge has broken ground on a data center outside Bangkok, Thailand.
The Stonepeak-backed firm and local energy firm B.Grimm Power Public Company (BGRIM) this week celebrated the groundbreaking of their first joint data center in Chonburi.
First announced in June 2025, construction is now underway on the 100MW campus, with a Q4 2026 target Ready-for-Service (RFS) date.
Located within Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) to the east of Bangkok, the companies said the project is part of a $1 billion investment plan to deliver hyperscale and AI-ready data center campuses across the country, powered by B.Grimm Power’s renewable energy portfolio.
“Breaking ground on our first campus in Chonburi is a pivotal moment for Digital Edge,” said John Freeman, CEO of Digital Edge. “Together with B.Grimm Power, we are delivering AI-ready, sustainable infrastructure at a scale and speed that matches the ambitions of our customers and the needs of the region. This campus will be a cornerstone of Thailand’s rapid digital transformation, meeting the surging demand for AI and machine learning.”
New York-based private equity firm Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners formed Digital Edge in August 2020. The company has 24 data centers in operation and under construction, and more than 1.1GW of secured IT power across Japan, Korea, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The company has been targeting Thailand for several years.
B.Grimm Power, founded in 1993, is one of Thailand’s largest industrial power producers. According to its website, the company currently has an installed capacity of 3,338MW and aims to obtain Power Purchase Agreements totaling 10GW by 2030.
BGRIM first announced plans to expand into the data center industry in May 2024. The company reported that it was in talks to supply 300MW of electricity from renewable sources to data center operators and will also provide equipment for the industry.
Dr. Harald Link, group president of B.Grimm Power PCL, added: “Today’s groundbreaking marks the next step in our partnership to realize our shared vision of combining green energy and advanced technology to power Thailand’s digital future. This facility will not only serve global tech leaders but also strengthen the country’s position as a leading digital hub in Southeast Asia.”
