Banglalink deploys on-site solar array at data center in Gazipur, Bangladesh

Installs 80kW system at facility

Banglalink, a Bangladeshi telco firm, has deployed a solar array at its data center in Gazipur, situated just north of the capital, Dhaka

The telco installed an 80kW solar power system at the facility, becoming the first mobile network operator in the country to deploy solar at one of its facilities. The system is expected to produce approximately 130MWh of power per year, with the company claiming that it will reduce its annual emissions by around 60 tons.

The array will be deployed across 9,000 sq ft (835 sqm) of unused roof space, and according to the company, it is part of a broader effort to integrate renewable assets.

Commenting on the deployment of the system, Huseyin Turker, chief technology and information officer at Banglalink, said: “Through this initiative, Banglalink has set a national benchmark for sustainable innovation that will drive significant environmental impact.”

Banglalink is Bangladesh’s third-largest mobile network operator. It is wholly owned by Veon, a multinational telco company headquartered in Dubai.

Last May, the company confirmed the shutdown of its 3G network, stating that it would now focus on expanding its 4G mobile network.

The 3G shutdown followed the finalized sale of 2,000 telecom towers in Bangladesh to Summit Towers as part of a $100 million deal.

On-site solar is becoming an increasingly popular option for telco and data center operators. Last month, Oman Data Park (ODP) tapped Omani solar developer Solar Wadi to develop an on-site 1.4MW solar project to directly power its KOM 4 data center in Rusayl, Oman

Last November, Bahraini telecommunications firm Batelco deployed an off-grid mobile site powered by wind and solar generation to power its operations.
