BDx inks 50MW renewable supply agreement with Hexa in Malaysia

Power to be imported into Singapore to supply BDx data centers in the region

APAC data center operator BDx Data Centers has signed a renewable supply agreement with Pan-Asian renewable developer Hexa Renewables for at least 50MW of capacity in Malaysia.

The agreement is part of a strategic partnership between the two companies, with the power imported into the Singaporean-Malaysian energy grid, which will supply energy to BDx data centers across the region.

“This energy will help BDx meet the rising demand for sustainable digital infrastructure, aligning with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, as well as serve as an innovative model of cross-border decarbonization initiatives, with Singapore set to add at least 300MW in data center capacity,” read a joint statement.

In addition, the deal is expected to support the construction of new low-carbon energy projects in Malaysia, as part of the country’s broader goal to deploy 1GW of capacity across the region.

It will also aim to support Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, a national strategy launched back in 2021 to drive sustainable development and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The city-state has a goal of 8.6GW of installed renewable capacity by 2050; however, due to land constraints, the ability to deploy large-scale solar in the country is limited.

The partnership with Malaysia is seen as a way to circumvent this issue and capitalize on the country’s vast solar potential - with estimates as high as 138GW in Peninsular Malaysia -to further its net-zero goals. The city-state is currently developing the necessary frameworks to recognize renewable energy certificates from cross-border generation assets. According to experts, the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project will serve as a model for any future arrangements.

BDx was founded back in 2019 and is headquartered in Singapore. It is a portfolio company of I Squared Capital, one of the world's largest infrastructure investment firms. The company has an extensive portfolio of data centers and Edge facilities across APAC, including Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan. The company is seeking to grow its portfolio across APAC to 1GW, and recently announced that it had secured funding for its first hyperscale data center project in Hong Kong.

It has signed several renewable supply agreements to support its operations. In June, it signed a 30MVA Power Purchase Agreement with PT PLN to power its Indonesian data center portfolio.

Hexa Renewables was founded in 2020 and is also a portfolio company of I Squared. The company focuses on developing solar, onshore wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). It has projects across Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and India. The company is seeking to develop at least 5GW of renewable and BESS in its target markets over the next few years.
