DataSpots secures network approval for eight R$15bn data center projects

Sites will be developed in São Paulo, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul

DataSpots, a Brazilian company dedicated to identifying and developing land for data centers, is set to build several facilities across the country.

The company recently obtained eight approvals from the national network operator ONS for the development of data centers in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul, reports BNamericas.

According to the company, these projects involve investments of approximately 15 billion reais ($2.74bn).

DataSpots is part of the ON Group, launched in 2018 and made up of energy and infrastructure companies, including Datlaz, SunaEnergy, Enliv, Ambius, Onflow, and Composta.

The projects were approved by the ONS based on an assessment that took into account aspects such as the current and planned infrastructure, the region's energy potential, available connectivity routes, logistical conditions, the supply of skilled labor, and land viability, according to the company.

The first project, located in Atibaia (SP), is strategically located close to fiber optic routes and high-capacity substations, which ensures low latency and agile access to energy. With an estimated investment of 3 billion reais ($548 million), operations are scheduled to begin in 2028.

The second project is located in Nova Iguaçu (RJ) and benefits from a coastal position, with direct access to international submarine cables. The initiative foresees investments of around 6 billion reais ($1.96bn) and is scheduled to begin operations in 2030.

The third project, located in Bateias - a district of Campo Largo (PR) - has an abundant supply of clean energy from renewable sources, advantageous logistical infrastructure, and ample potential for expansion. With an estimated investment of 6 billion reais, the unit is scheduled to begin operations in 2029.

The company said that the projects are currently in the early stages of development, with a focus on obtaining licenses, acquiring land, and defining the financial structure, after receiving authorization to move forward from the ONS.

DataSpots added that contract negotiations are underway with energy distributors Elektro (SP), Copel (PR), and Light (RJ), as well as with transmission companies.
