City of Hanau, Germany, secures financing for data center

Existing data center to be replaced by EV charging station

The City of Hanau, Germany, has secured financing for a data center.

Municipal IT provider Beteiligungs Holding Hanau GmbH (BHG) has taken out a €500,000 ($583,000) loan in order to purchase the data center. 80 percent of the loan is backed by the City of Hanau.

According to the organization’s LinkedIn, BHG ensures the operation of IT services for local government and businesses.

The data center will be built at the city’s department of transportation, the Hanauer Strassenbahn. Construction is scheduled to begin in Q4 2025, and the facility is set to be operational in Q1 2026.

A data center supporting local IT workloads currently exists, but according to the press release, the existing facility is set to be replaced by an electric vehicle charging station

The facility will be somewhat small, standing at 14 meters long and 3.2 meters wide. Details about capacity were not shared.

Mayor Claus Kaminsky said that the charging station was a future project for the city’s transport transition, and that the necessary replacement of the old data center would enable the city to ensure replacement infrastructure was delivered in a timely manner.

Hanau is located east of Frankfurt, which is the largest urban area in the western German state of Hesse.
