ADB to fund data center in Thailand with US$ 26.8 million green loan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a THB900 million (US$ 26.8 million) green loan agreement with GSA Data Center 01 Company Limited (GSA) to fund the development of a 25.6-megawatt data center in Thailand, the ADB said in a statement yesterday. This is ADB’s first lending in the data center sector in Thailand, as well as in the Asia Pacific region.

To be located in Samut Prakan province, the data center is designed for Tier III certification with a power usage effectiveness rating of 1.4 and uptime of 99.982 per cent, as well as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. Tenants of the co-location facility will have the option of obtaining renewable energy certificates as well as RE procurement services from GSA.

“This investment provides a strong case study for the data center market for green financing, promoting resilience and sustainability, while enhancing the potential of Thailand’s digital economy,” said ADB Country Director for Thailand Anouj Mehta.

Yupapin Wangviwat, Chief Financial Officer of Gulf Development, said, “The green loan arrangement for our first data center in Thailand marks a pivotal step in advancing our digital infrastructure strategy. The participation of ADB and other financial partners demonstrates strong institutional confidence in both our long-term vision and our commitment to sustainability.”

GSA is a joint venture of Gulf Development, one of Thailand’s largest independent power producers, Singtel, a regional telecommunications leader, and AIS, a major Thai telecommunications leader in mobile and fixed broadband. The company is scheduled to begin commercial operations by 2025. ADB is a leading development bank in Asia Pacific.
