Google plans $6bn 1GW data center in India's Andhra Pradesh - report

Vizag data center could be the largest in Asia

Google plans to build a 1GW data center in southern India with a $6 billion investment.

The project in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, includes $2bn in renewable energy development, Reuters reports.

The data center would be the largest in capacity and investment in Asia, and comes alongside Google's data center expansion in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Google Cloud opened a region in Mumbai back in 2017, and another in Delhi in 2021.

It is also planning to launch a sovereign AI cloud with Airtel Business this year. In Q4 2025, the India portion of Google's Blue Raman subsea cable is expected to go live, landing in the western city of Mumbai.

Back in 2020, the company said that it would spend $10bn over 5-7 years on helping digitalize the nation; that same year, it invested $4.5bn in Indian telco Reliance Jio.

More broadly, Google plans to spend $75 billion on data centers around the world this year.
