Cloud provider to lease facilities from DayOne Data Centers
Oracle has quietly established a cloud presence in Indonesia.
According to Bloomberg, the software company will lease data centers operated by DayOne Data Centers Singapore, the recently separated international unit of Chinese data center operator GDS.
Oracle's Indonesia North (Batam) cloud region is listed as live on the company's website.
These are located in Nongsa Digital Park, situated on the island of Batam. The island is opposite to Singapore across the Singapore Strait.
Nongsa Digital Park, developed by Indonesian conglomerate Citramas Group, was granted special economic zone status in July 2020. Tax incentives for data center businesses are provided. Hong Kong private equity firm Gaw Capital Partners established a facility there in February.
Previous reports about Oracle’s potential foray into Indonesia surfaced in March. DayOne’s involvement was not known at the time.
Oracle recently netted a $30bn deal to provide cloud services to OpenAI.
Indonesia is a fast-growing data center market. Microsoft and Google operate cloud regions in the country, and colo giant Digital Realty recently formed a joint venture with Bersama Digital Infrastructure Asia for an expansion. Most of Indonesia’s data centers are clustered around Jakarta, which is located on the island of Java.
