Equinix's SG1 data center in Singapore hit by outage during maintenance

Impacting Singtel, StarHub, ViewQwest, and others

Equinix's SG1 data center in Singapore saw two data halls go offline in a major outage.

The 31 May incident lasted more than an hour and caused widespread service issues across the country.

"During scheduled maintenance at SG1 that required a reduction in power redundancy, we experienced equipment failure resulting in a power outage to two data halls in the data center," Equinix said in a statement that described the incident as 'minor and localized.'

"The issue has been resolved."

The facility at 20 Ayer Rajah Crescent has 13MW of capacity and spans more than 100,000 sq ft (9,290 sqm).

Multiple Internet Service Providers were impacted by the outage, including Singtel, StarHub, and ViewQwest.

“We would like to stress that this incident is entirely unrelated to any previous service issue," ViewQwest said. "It was triggered by an external infrastructure failure beyond our direct control."

The company said it will work with Equinix to discover the root cause.

Equinix's Singaporean operations last suffered an outage in October 2023, when an issue with the chilled water system brought down the SG3 data center, and with it banking apps, WhatsApp, and Call of Duty.

Equinix Singapore also saw service disruptions in 2013, during scheduled power maintenance.
