Casa dos Ventos granted approval to construct TikTok backed 300MW data center in Brazil

Operations slated for January 2027

Brazilian renewable developer Casa dos Ventos has been granted regulatory approval to develop a 300MW data center in northeast Brazil.

According to Reuters, the company had been in discussions with ByteDance, the Chinese partner company of TikTok, about a major data center investment in the region, which could be tied to the recently approved project.

Casa dos Ventos has said it expects to begin construction on the project in H2 of this year, with operations slated for January 2027.

Casa dos Ventos received approval from Operador Nacional do Sistema Eletrico (ONS), Brazil’s national grid operator, to connect the project, which is located at the Pecem port complex in Ceará. According to reports, the total investment in infrastructure and equipment for the data center is expected to reach up to 50 billion reais ($8.7 billion).

The project was initially rejected due to grid stability concerns, however, following a technical reassessment led by the national power grid operator and Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy, the project was able to secure approval.

Reflecting on the approval, ONS CEO Marcio Rea said: “The ONS has been seeking safe ways to meet access requests from large energy consumers. The growth of the data center sector is important for the Brazilian economy, particularly in the Northeast, due to the expectation of bringing in a lot of investment.”

Reports originally surfaced about the planned data center last month. Reuters reported that the data center would have an initial capacity of 300MW with the potential to scale to 900MW.

TikTok has committed significant amounts of capital to bolstering its global data center presence over recent years. In March 2025, the company said it would invest $8.8 billion in data centers in Thailand over the next five years.

Currently, the company predominantly relies on leasing space at colocation facilities. Within the European market, its operations are based out of data centers run by Green Mountain in Norway and Echelon in Ireland.

Casa dos Ventos is increasingly targeting data center developers as crucial offtakers of its wind energy portfolio. Last October, the company signed a long-term supply agreement with Latin American data center developer OData to supply power from its 360MW Babilônia Sul wind complex in Várzea Nova, Bahia, Brazil.

According to the company, it has a portfolio of 3.1GW of operational wind power assets, in addition to a further 30GW currently under development. Its operational assets include the 151.2MW Folha Larga Sul wind farm in Campo Formoso, and the 1.038GW Rio do Vento wind farm in São Tomé, Lajes, Caiçara Rio do Vento.
