BRIGHTRAY breaks record by completing data center in 8 months

BRIGHTRAY, a leading data centre developer headquartered in China, yesterday launched MY-01, arguably the fastest built data center in the world. Completed within eight months, the feat was accomplished using BRIGHTRAY’s fully prefabricated modular data centre solution which combined parallel construction and in-house supply chain management.

The first of three facilities, MY-01 is believed to be Malaysia’s first fully prefabricated modular data centre. The three-storey building which is located within BRIGHTRAY campus in Sedenak Tech Park in Johor, will have 90MW of capacity across three data centres when fully built up.

According to BRIGHTRAY’s executive vice president Wayne Pei, an even faster six-month timeframe for a 30-60MW data centre is entirely possible. Speaking at the launch, Pei said: “We are the world’s first company to build fully prefab modular data centres which are efficient, low carbon, and recyclable. Today, the AI-driven industry chain has become the world’s largest supply chain, from AI applications to GPU development to data centres to renewable green energy, energy storage, new materials and equipment. The data centre is the key linking them all. The whole booming data centre sector is just the beginning.”

The timeline for the construction of MY-01 at each stage is as follows: 70 days for foundation, seven days to assemble ground floor units, seven days for the second floor, eight days for the third floor and roof, and 32 days for roof pouring work and external installation. Essentially, it took just 22 days to “assemble” the floor area, or three months from piling works to having the entire structure in place. BRIGHTRAY’s super fast time-to-market is possible as 90 per cent of the parts are prefabricated at its factory.  While there, the steel structure is produced, modules are stack-tested, pipelines, cable trays and critical equipment are installed, and the finished modules packed. The latter are then shipped to Malaysia and trucked to Sedenak, where they are pieced together. Onsite, concrete is poured, the system is hooked up and fire-rated components are installed.

Apart from the jaw-dropping time to market, other noteworthy features of this data center included local sourcing for materials and generous ceiling height of 6 to 8 metres.

At the launch, Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Communications Malaysia said in a speech, “MY-01 is not just a data centre but a strategic asset, bolstering the region’s connectivity and supporting ASEAN’s digital ambitions. Ultimately,  it represents confidence by investors and progress. Each new data centre adds to our nation’s digital capabilities and brings us a step closer to our vision of becoming a leading digital nation.”
