Digi Power X to deploy Nvidia GPUs at data center in Alabama

Cryptofirm looks to get into AI and HPC game.

Cryptomining firm Digi Power X Inc. is to deploy Nvidia GPUs at a data center in Alabama as part of its pivot to AI.

The company this week announced that its AI and HPC-focused subsidiary, US Data Centers, has entered into a collaboration with Super Micro to deploy customized B200 GPU rack solutions at the former’s data center in Alabama.

The total size of the deployment wasn’t shared, but the companies are targeting to make the initial deployment operational within 120 days, with full test operations expected during Q4 2025.

Renderings suggest the companies are looking to develop self-contained modules and racks.

Michel Amar, CEO of Digi Power X, said: “This collaboration marks a key step in expanding our company’s AI and high-performance computing infrastructure.”

Formerly known as Digihost, Digi Power X was previously focused on mining cryptocurrencies and placing mining hardware at power plants for itself and other companies. As with many other crypto firms, the company is pivoting to host AI hardware amid a capacity crunch, and this year launched US Data Centers to focus on AI and HPC colocation.

Digi Power X acquired the Alabama site, in Shelby County’s Columbiana, in June 2022 from Grede II, LLC for $2.75 million. The site came with 160,000 sq ft of office and industrial warehouse space.

Previously used to host its cryptomining rigs, the site is now being repurposed for Tier III-quality colocation. Digi Power X aims to expand the Columbiana site to 22MW in 2026 and 55MW by 2027. The company is investing around $175 million in the first phase of development and another $265m in the second phase.

Digi Power X owns and operates three data center sites across Columbiana, as well as Buffalo and North Ronawanada in New York.

The North Ronawanada site, acquired in 2021 and colocated with a natural gas power plant, totals 60MW with plans to add another 60MW. The Buffalo site totals 19MW. A 200MW site is in development in Hildebran, North Carolina.

Digi Power has previously announced plans to deploy a 60MW nuclear microreactor from Nano Nuclear at its New York power plant.

Amid increased demand for capacity and limited supply, crypto-focused companies with ample amounts of cheap power are pivoting to serve AI cloud firms. The likes of Hive Digital Technologies, Northern Data, Applied Digital, Iris Energy, Mawson Infrastructure, Crusoe, and others are but a small number of those that have made the shift.

Last year, Digi Power X became the anchor subscriber to a 5MW community solar project located in Grand Island, New York.
