Merlin Edged launches Barcelona data center, CoreWeave to take 15MW

Blackwells planned for next year.

Merlin Edged has launched a data center in Barcelona, Spain, that will be used by neocloud CoreWeave.

The facility was inaugurated today by the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, and Albert Tort, Secretary of Telecommunications and Digital Transformation of the Government at Generalitat de Catalunya.

In its first 15MW phase, CoreWeave will deploy 10,224 Nvidia H200 Tensor Core GPUs with InfiniBand connectivity. Blackwell GPUs are expected next year, for a second phase.

"We'll make our decision on exactly the mix of what we deploy here at a later date," CoreWeave's international GM Mike Mattacola told DCD.

"We'll make a decision a little bit closer to the time when we plan to launch capacity, but it will be really looking at what the market needs. So if you look at the demand in Europe today, obviously there's quite a bit of training demand, but that's going to pretty quickly flip to inference."

The company plans to spend some $2.2 billion on expanding its data center infrastructure across Europe (alongside a $1.3bn UK push), including this Spanish facility.

"This is our southern Europe region, which gives us the ability to feed any metro in the south within 20 to 30 milliseconds," Mattacola said. "We may have some customers that train for a year or something, maybe less, and then they're moving on to serving afterwards. But they can stay in this region."

The facility is connected to the Barcelona Cable Landing Station (BCLS), linking the site to the Western Mediterranean. "If you look at recent announcements in Iberia on cables, the newer, larger, faster cable infrastructure is coming into Iberia," Edged Energy CEO Jakob Carnemark told DCD.

"Obviously, it's a very well-connected site. But if you look at just the larger deployment of cable infrastructure at speed, the Iberian peninsula has the fastest, highest capacity cable infrastructure in Europe."

Mayor Jaume Collboni added: "This asset represents the realization of a shared vision: to transform Barcelona into a true digital port in the Mediterranean, and into an international benchmark for the digital economy and technological innovation. A forward-looking infrastructure, built to address the technological challenges of the future as they arise."

The facility is a joint venture between Edged and Merlin Properties.
