Company expands into the Volunteer State.
US firm 5C is planning to develop a data center in Memphis, Tennessee.
According to WREG, plans were submitted to Shelby County late last year to turn a multi-story warehouse and office at 4300 Getwell Road into a data center that will support an initial 15MW IT load in its first phase.
US operator 5C Group is reportedly the company behind the project.
A project manager with Adag Group, one of the Quebec-based firms involved in the project along with Hypertec, told permitting officers in a letter that the site would be a “transformative opportunity for the region.”
Discount store Fred’s closed its Memphis headquarters on Getwell Road and sold the building to commercial real estate company Olymbec in July 2019. According to Olymbec, the complex totals 965,000 sq ft (89,651 sqm) across 59 acres.
On its website, 5C lists plans for a Memphis facility, known as MEM01, that will offer 20MW in 2025 and 60MW from 2027.
Founded in 1947, Fred's was a discount retailer that at its peak operated more than 500 locations across the US. The company went bankrupt in 2019.
5C was launched in 2023 and is based in Montreal, Canada. 5C was recently acquired by Hypertec and merged with Hypertech’s cloud division. The move marked a return to the data center business for Hypertech after selling its old data center division.
5C was founded by Steve Perez, who was previously a founding member of the Canadian firm Hypertec DCS, which was acquired by Vantage in 2020.
Other data centers announced by 5C are a 200MW campus in Columbus, Ohio, which was revealed in June 2024, and a 20MW data center in Phoenix, Arizona, announced in September. A 25MW facility is also reportedly in the works in Charlotte, North Carolina, that could reach up to 1.6GW at full build-out.
