Yandex to develop data center in Mozhaisk, Russia

"Russia's Google" will invest close to $193 million in facility.

Yandex is planning to develop a data center in Mozhaisk, Russia.

As reported by local outlets including Mozhaisk Media, the company will invest around 16 billion rubles ($192.93m) in the data center project. An exact location for the facility has not been shared, though it is said to be near the village of Zachatye.

Details about the data center project are sparse, but it is aimed to launch in 2027, and bring around 100 jobs to the area. The data center will offer cloud services.

The applicant, "Yandex Data Center Moscow Region," has existed since 2024, its office is located in Mozhaisk on Moskovskaya Street, 36.

Yandex, which has been referred to colloquially as "Russia's Google," currently operates five data centers across Russia, located in Vladimir, Sasovo, Ivanteevka, Mytishichi, and the newest - a 63MW data center in Kaluga Oblast around 200 miles south of Moscow.

A Yandex data center experienced a major outage last month, which the company described as being the first of its kind in 15 years.

Mozhaisk is located around 177 miles west of Moscow. Moscow is Russia's primary data center market, with DataCenterMap listing 100 facilities in the area. Operators in the area include CROC Incorporated, IXcellerate, Rostelecom, 3data, and Stack Telecom.

Yandex's holding company was previously based in the Netherlands, but separated its European and Russian operations, fully divesting Yandex from the company in February 2024 as part of a strategic move following the outbreak of the Ukraine war. The European operations - entirely separate from Yandex today - are now known as Nebius.
