Vocus to Build 4,000km Fiber Route Connecting Brisbane to Darwin Under Australian Digital Infrastructure Platform

Australian telecommunications company Vocus has unveiled plans to construct a 4,000km (2,485-mile) ducted long-haul fiber route linking Brisbane to Darwin, marking the second major project under its Australian Digital Infrastructure Platform (ADIP). The initiative is designed to address the country's rapidly growing fiber capacity requirements driven by AI, cloud, and digital infrastructure investment, supporting demand from hyperscaler, neocloud, and enterprise customers.

The route will connect Brisbane, Townsville, and Darwin, accommodating up to 3,456 fiber strands along its approximately 4,000km path. Vocus said it has already commenced route planning, technical design, and customer engagement activities as part of the project's early works phase, with the fiber route expected to be ready for service in 2030. The project covers thousands of new fiber route kilometers, thousands of new fiber pairs, and hundreds of additional terabits of capacity across both subsea and terrestrial networks.

The announcement comes amid what Vocus-commissioned market research estimates will be a tripling of Australia's data center capacity by 2030, largely driven by AI workload demands. "Australia is in a period of unprecedented investment in AI infrastructure, data centers, and international connectivity, requiring exponential investment in new terrestrial and subsea fiber networks. Vocus launched ADIP to build the digital infrastructure Australia needs to compete globally in AI," said Andres Irlando, chief executive officer of Vocus. "Northern Australia is becoming a critical region for AI, cloud, and digital services, with Queensland and the Northern Territory emerging as important data center precincts and gateways connecting Australia with Asia and the United States."

The project represents a significant expansion of Australia's long-haul fiber infrastructure at a time when AI-driven demand is reshaping connectivity requirements across the region. By linking key northern territories to major population centers, the route is positioned to strengthen Australia's role as a digital gateway between Asia and the United States, while providing the backbone capacity needed to support the next wave of data center and cloud investment. The announcement follows Vocus's recent quadrupling of capacity on its Adelaide-Perth 2 (AP2) optical route, one of Australia's most critical long-haul fiber corridors, underscoring the company's broader push to scale national digital infrastructure.
