UK Renewable Developer Downing Launches 500MW Data Center Pipeline in Sweden and Finland

Downing Renewable Developments (DRD), a London-based developer of solar, battery, and onshore wind projects, has entered the data center market with an initial development pipeline exceeding 500MW of advanced projects, alongside a broader portfolio of early-stage sites. The move marks a significant strategic expansion for a renewable energy firm seeking to leverage its generation expertise amid surging demand for powered land from data center operators across Europe.

The advanced projects are located in central Sweden and southern Finland, where DRD says it has already secured land and grid connections, with those connections expected to be delivered before 2030. Permitting for the first sites is expected to begin shortly, and the company targets its first projects reaching powered land status by the fourth quarter of 2027 — meaning the land and required power capacity will have been secured for future data center development. Further project details have not been disclosed.

DRD told Data Center Dynamics that all sites will be grid-connected, though the company also intends to supply some locations through direct, private-wire renewable energy generation. The approach reflects a growing trend among developers to pair data center campuses with dedicated clean energy assets, reducing strain on public grids and offering long-term price stability.

"We already have an advanced pipeline of more than 500MW and are progressing our first projects in Sweden and Finland," said Tony Gannon, head of Downing Renewable Developments. "We see considerable potential to grow this area of the business and look forward to working with data center operators and other partners looking to develop well-located sites with credible long-term energy solutions."

Tom Williams, head of energy and infrastructure at Downing, described the initiative as a natural extension of the firm's existing capabilities. "This initiative is a natural evolution of our business and one we have been working on for some time," he said. "We believe that we are uniquely placed to provide firmed supply from portfolios of renewable energy generation assets to the data centers we are developing, providing long-term security and resilience and lessening the impact of these demand customers on the grid and the environment."

The Nordic region has emerged as a prime destination for data center investment, drawn by abundant renewable power, cool climates that reduce cooling costs, and supportive regulatory environments. DRD's total development pipeline stands at 9.4GW across the UK and Nordic markets, though it remains unclear whether the company will utilize its renewable assets to power its planned data centers. In addition to its London headquarters, DRD maintains regional offices in Helsinki and Stockholm.

The entry of a renewable developer into data center site development underscores the deepening convergence of energy and digital infrastructure, as operators increasingly prioritize access to reliable, sustainable power in their site selection decisions.
