Siemens Energy to supply B&W with 1GW of steam turbine-generators for US data center power program

US energy technology firm Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) has signed a new agreement with Siemens Energy to begin work on 20 steam turbine-generator sets totaling 1GW of capacity, designated for B&W's FastPower program serving data center customers in the United States. The order is separate from a deal struck between the two companies earlier this year to supply Applied Digital's data center campuses with natural gas generation, which covers 300MW of capacity.

B&W did not disclose the identity of the customer behind the new 1GW order. The company has been contacted for further details, but no additional information has been released at this time.

The agreement reflects the accelerating demand for reliable, large-scale power generation, particularly from AI-driven data center operators. "As demand for dependable, large-scale power generation continues to accelerate, particularly from AI data center customers, we are strengthening our collaboration with Siemens Energy through this agreement," said Brandy Johnson, chief technology officer at B&W. "This order secures 1GW of capacity and further positions us to deliver reliable, high-capacity energy solutions on the accelerated timelines our customers require."

B&W's FastPower program combines its boiler and generation technologies with Siemens Energy's turbines to offer data center operators a faster alternative to conventional simple- or combined-cycle gas plants. The program is designed to address the growing need for behind-the-meter power solutions that can be deployed more quickly than traditional grid-connected infrastructure.

Siemens Energy executives echoed the significance of the deal in the context of broader market trends. "Siemens Energy's agreement with Babcock & Wilcox to commence work on these steam turbine generator sets reflects a broader trend we are currently seeing in the U.S. market: growing demand for reliable, affordable, and resilient energy infrastructure," said Tobias Panse, senior vice president of steam turbines and generators at Siemens Energy.

The deal is part of a wider wave of large-scale power supply agreements across the US data center sector. Several major turbine and generator manufacturers have recently secured substantial contracts, including Finnish engine manufacturer Wärtsilä, which signed two data center supply deals in Texas and Ohio in April, and Hyundai Heavy Industries, which inked a 1GW deal to supply a data center in the US earlier this month. These developments underscore the intensifying race among power equipment providers to meet the surging electricity demands of hyperscale and AI-focused data center developments nationwide.
