Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung visited SK Group's AI data center in Seoul on September 7 during National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man's official trip to South Korea, signaling Hanoi's growing interest in attracting advanced digital infrastructure investment from one of South Korea's largest conglomerates, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The Haein GPU Center in Gasan, Seoul, operated by SK Telecom (SKT), a subsidiary of SK Group, stands as one of South Korea's major AI computing facilities. Designed to support the development of large-scale AI models, the center plays a central role in advancing the nation's sovereign AI capabilities. The facility runs a unified cluster equipped with more than 1,000 NVIDIA Blackwell B200 GPUs, integrated with an AI infrastructure management and virtualization platform that enables flexible GPU resource allocation for AI model development, training, and deployment.
Currently, the Haein center provides computing infrastructure for South Korea's national sovereign AI foundational model program, reinforcing domestic AI research and development. The facility is a key pillar in South Korea's strategy to position itself among the world's top three AI nations.
During the working session, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung welcomed SK Group's sustained interest, presence, and investment activities in Vietnam. He emphasized that SK possesses comprehensive financial, technological, and governance capabilities that align with Vietnam's goal of attracting selective foreign investment in its new development phase. The Deputy Prime Minister urged SK Group to explore opportunities in key sectors, particularly energy, AI, and technology, with a focus on high-potential strategic localities such as Bac Ninh, Phu Tho, and Tay Ninh.
He also expressed expectations that SK Group would expand its footprint in Vietnam through investments in high-tech ventures, clean energy transition projects, and core digital infrastructure, while transferring advanced technologies, nurturing local talent, and forging strong linkages with Vietnamese technology enterprises.
SK Group currently operates around 200 subsidiaries globally, with 2025 revenue exceeding $170 billion, concentrating on AI, semiconductors, and energy. In Vietnam, SK has made major investments exceeding $3.5 billion in leading domestic enterprises, underscoring its deepening commitment to the Southeast Asian market.
Industry observers view the visit as an early step in SK Group's potential expansion into Vietnam's emerging AI data center landscape. With Vietnam actively courting foreign investment in digital infrastructure and clean energy, a move by SK into the country could accelerate the development of sovereign AI capabilities in the region while strengthening economic ties between Hanoi and Seoul.
