HyperDC Pty Ltd has submitted a planning permit application to the Victorian government for a large-scale data center development in Moorabool, marking another significant addition to Australia's rapidly expanding digital infrastructure pipeline. The project underscores the growing momentum behind hyperscale and wholesale data center investment across the greater Melbourne region, driven by surging demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads, and digital services across the Asia-Pacific.
The proposed campus would be situated at 715 Ballan Road, a largely vacant parcel of land outside Geelong, approximately 75 kilometers (47 miles) west of Melbourne's central business district. According to the company's website, the MBL1 site spans 39 hectares and is designed to ultimately deliver 400MW of IT capacity, though further technical specifications and construction timelines have not been disclosed.
HyperDC describes itself as a data center developer, though little public information is available about the company's track record or backing. An individual named Gerard Adamsons lists himself as a director of the company on LinkedIn, and was previously associated with Australian residential developer Villawood Properties.
The location offers notable energy infrastructure advantages. The site sits close to the 300MW Victorian Big Battery, a grid-scale energy storage facility built by HMC Capital-backed Illuma that comprises 210 Tesla Megapacks. AusNet Services' existing Moorabool Terminal Station is also located nearby, providing high-voltage transmission access that would be essential for a campus of this scale.
The filing reflects a broader trend of data center developers gravitating toward sites with existing power infrastructure and energy storage capacity in Australia, as the country races to accommodate growing domestic and regional demand for compute capacity. If approved, the Moorabool project would join a wave of proposed and under-construction facilities positioning Victoria as a key hub for digital infrastructure in the southern hemisphere.
