Space infrastructure startup Lunar Outpost has announced a collaboration with Nvidia to deploy lunar edge computing capabilities across multiple upcoming Moon missions, part of the broader Artemis program. The partnership marks a significant step in bringing advanced artificial intelligence to deep-space robotic operations.
Lunar Outpost will integrate Nvidia’s edge-focused Jetson platform and CUDA-X libraries to power onboard data processing, real-time lunar mapping, and communications on its rovers. The technology enables autonomous decision-making without relying on constant communication with Earth, a critical capability for missions operating in extreme environments far from ground control.
“Lunar missions require intelligent systems that can process data and make decisions in real time,” said Chen Su, head of Edge AI product marketing at Nvidia. “Lunar Outpost is using Nvidia Jetson and CUDA-X libraries to give its rovers the onboard AI computing needed for terrain mapping, autonomous navigation, mission data processing and scientific discovery.”
Traditionally, robotic explorers on the Moon and Mars have relied on slow-and-steady methods, waiting for signals to travel across the solar system before executing commands. This approach becomes increasingly untenable for missions beyond the inner planets or near the lunar surface where immediate responses are required. Automation, both companies emphasized, is essential for future space exploration.
Founded in 2017, Lunar Outpost specializes in building hardened robotic systems for extreme environments, primarily space. The company aims to be involved in ten lunar missions before the end of the decade. The first deployment under the collaboration will be on Lunar Voyage 2 (LV2), scheduled for launch later this year to explore Reiner Gamma, a lunar swirl known for its magnetic anomalies. The LV2 rover will use an Nvidia Jetson module to command its LiDAR system, post-process sensor data, and compress large files for downlink to Earth.
Subsequent missions LV3 and LV5 will feature autonomous human-robot interaction for the first time on an extraterrestrial body, representing a major leap in robotic autonomy.
