Nvidia has announced plans to invest up to $5 billion in Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), the AI safety startup co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The move marks one of the largest corporate investments in a single AI research lab and signals Nvidia’s aggressive push to lock in high-profile customers for its next-generation hardware.
As part of the deal, SSI will deploy Nvidia’s latest Vera Rubin CPU-GPU systems, which the company says will increase its total compute capacity “by an order of magnitude.” SSI had previously relied on Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to power its research, making the shift a significant win for Nvidia in the competitive AI chip market.
“Ilya has pioneered fundamental breakthroughs at the foundation of modern AI, beginning with AlexNet,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia. “We are excited to see what new breakthroughs SSI will discover powered by our Vera Rubin platform.”
Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and CEO of SSI, added: “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big Nvidia computer will let us do so. Founded in 2024 with operations in the United States and Israel, SSI bills itself as the “world’s first straight-shot SSI lab.” Unlike major AI labs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceXAI that release incremental model updates, SSI plans to withhold any product launch until it can deploy a safe superintelligence. This long-term, safety-first mission has attracted both academic interest and venture capital, and the Nvidia investment now provides the massive compute resources necessary to scale experimental models.
The investment underscores Nvidia’s willingness to fund even those AI companies that initially relied on competing hardware. By securing deep ties with Sutskever’s lab, Nvidia not only gains a marquee customer for its Vera Rubin platform but also positions itself at the center of the next wave of AI safety research. As the race to artificial general intelligence intensifies, the ability to scale compute with purpose-built systems like Vera Rubin is becoming a decisive factor for leading labs.
