NTT Data Plans Expanded Indonesia Data Centre Investment Amid Regional Growth

By: IDCNOVARegion: Southeast Asia
Japan's NTT Data Group is preparing to accelerate its data centre investment in Indonesia, according to Yasuhiro Kajiki, managing director for Japan and Asia Pacific at the company's data centres unit, who described the approach as "very aggressive" in an interview with Reuters. The expansion reflects growing confidence in Southeast Asia's digital infrastructure market, even as the sector faces increasing scrutiny over its resource demands.

The company marked the opening of a 12-megawatt data centre annex in Jakarta and disclosed that it is seeking additional land as part of a two- to three-year expansion plan. NTT Data has invested approximately $500 million in Indonesian data centres since 2015, though Kajiki declined to specify how much the company intends to commit to the new phase of development.

The push into Indonesia comes as data centre growth across the region—driven in part by demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing—has encountered resistance in countries including Malaysia and Indonesia. Local opposition has centred on pressure on electricity grids and water supplies, as well as competition for land. Kajiki acknowledged that community engagement is important as some projects face pushback from local residents.

Indonesia's data-centre market was valued at $2.81 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach $6.08 billion by 2031, according to a Research and Markets report published in January. The projected growth underscores the country's emerging role as a digital infrastructure hub in Southeast Asia, while also highlighting the challenge of balancing rapid expansion with local resource and environmental concerns.
