Mitsubishi Electric to build IT cooling facility in Ohio

Mitsubishi Electric is set to establish a manufacturing facility for IT cooling equipment in Ohio, US, a move aimed at accelerating business expansion through local production as demand for data center cooling systems surges across North America.

The Japanese industrial giant said it will create a new US-based company, MEHITS US, Inc., in August to manufacture IT cooling equipment at the site. The subsidiary will operate under the holding company Mitsubishi Electric US Holdings, Inc. and is positioned to meet what the company describes as growing demand for IT cooling systems across the US, a market expected to continue expanding in the coming years.

MEHITS US will invest roughly US$30 million in its manufacturing capabilities by renovating and repurposing part of an existing production facility operated by Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America, Inc. Production is scheduled to begin in April 2027.

“Mitsubishi Electric plans to grow its IT cooling systems business by establishing production in the US, the world’s largest market, and by strengthening its one-stop service capabilities, which provides integrated support from system design proposals for IT cooling equipment to sales and maintenance,” the company said via an online press release.

Currently, Mitsubishi Electric’s industrial infrastructure business in the US is led by Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc., which provides IT cooling equipment in combination with power supply systems, including uninterruptible power supplies, to its customers. The IT cooling systems themselves are developed and manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Hydronics & IT Cooling Systems S.p.A., headquartered in Italy.

Through the establishment of MEHITS US, Mitsubishi Electric will establish a local production system for IT cooling equipment in the US, aiming to boost local competitiveness by shortening lead times from production to delivery. The company also plans to ensure a stable product supply, develop products based on local customer needs such as energy savings, and expand its product lineup to include equipment compatible with liquid cooling.

Liquid cooling has become increasingly essential for data centers as companies invest more heavily in AI infrastructure. With liquid cooling, data center operators can deliver greater performance and density that modern AI workloads require, making the technology a critical component of next-generation facility design.

The company further intends to expand its IT cooling systems business in the US by enhancing its system design proposal and maintenance capabilities, strengthening its one-stop service model. In recent years, investment in AI-related infrastructure has been expanding across the US as generative AI adoption becomes more widespread. This has driven up demand for industrial infrastructure facilities that enable related equipment to operate energy efficiently, positioning the IT cooling systems field for sustained growth.

“Mitsubishi Electric is strengthening its one-stop service capabilities for IT cooling business in the US and other regions worldwide through proactive collaborations, acquisitions, and other initiatives,” the company added. “Mitsubishi Electric will continue to promote the global expansion of its IT cooling systems business, contributing to the stable operation and improved energy efficiency of industrial infrastructure facilities.”

The company also noted that it aims to provide total solutions by promoting company-wide business collaboration, including the integration of IT cooling solutions with components such as power supply equipment. This strategy reflects a broader industry trend toward integrated, energy-efficient infrastructure offerings as data center operators seek to manage rising power demands alongside AI-driven capacity growth.
